Tournament Rules

2023 Tournament Rules Coming Soon!
LEGENDS Fall 2022 rules for reference only!

Coaches will certify their players are properly equipped

Scoring and Time

  • Refs keep game time and penalty time
  • Table keeps score and can assist with penalty time if multiple penalties

Tournament Play – Pool Play

  •  2 – 21 minutes halves
  • 3- minute halftime
  • 3 game guarantee
  • No Timeouts in Pool Play Games
  • No Overtime in Pool Play Games
  • 2022 NFHS Rules with modifications below
  • If game ends in a tie, teams can choose to end game in a Braveheart (both teams must agree) to decide a winner rather than end in a tie
      • Braveheart will be 3v3 plus a goalie for each team
      • 1 player for each team (can be goalie) must stay on the defensive end of the field, 3 can go forward
      • Bravehearts must begin right away to keep the games on schedule
    • If both teams do not agree on braveheart, games end in a tie

Boys Rule Specifications

  • Referees will keep game time
  •  No stick checks unless refs think a stick is outrageously illegal
  •  4 pole maximum on the field
  •  Mercy Rule
    • (Applies to youth divisions only) Applied when there is a 7 goal deficit in pool play.  Teams down by 7 or more goals will get a free clear after each goal.  Coaches can agree to waive this rule.
  • Counts
    • 2023 – 2031 Grad Years:  Clearing Counts of 20 seconds to cross the midline and 10 seconds to advance the ball in the box.
      • The leading team must keep it in the box with under 2 minutes left in the game if the opponent is within 4 goals.
      • If a team leads by 4 or more goals, there will be no start/stop time under 2 minutes in either half. Instead, the game will continue to operate with a running clock.
      • If the score changes to less than 4 goal differential at any point during the final 2-minutes of either half, the clock goes back to stop clock.
    • No Counts – 2030 Grad Year and below.  Exception is a 5-second goalie count
  • Checking
    • Limited body checking in 2027 & 2028 Grad Year only.  Big hits & physical play (even within three yards of a loose ball) constitute unnecessary roughness (60 sec penalty)
    • One handed stick checks are not allowed in any youth divisions (2029 and below)
  • Penalties
    • Penalties are running time starting on the whistle (45 or 90 seconds)  Penalty time stops during injuries, end of quarters and while another penalty is being assessed.
    • 2031/32 Division – the offending player leaves the field and is substituted.  Fast Break situation occurs

EJECTIONS

  • Game ejections are handled by the referees
  • Tournament ejections are handled by the tournament director (2 unsportsmanlike conduct penalties warrant ejection or 1-game suspension)

Rosters

  • Legends tournament directors reserve the right to check rosters for any reason and if teams are found to be in violation of the rules, the tournament director can disqualify the team and nullify the results.
  • Rosters must be submitted by graduation years and/or age groups.  Every team is expected to comply with the thresholds on those age groups as posted on the website and appearing on the event schedule
  • Event directors can approve any adjustments to the rules if they feel it creates competitive bounds and does not minimize the experience of any players on the field
  • Double rostering players:  On certain occasions Legends tournament directors reserve the right to approve a player appearing on two rosters and playing on two teams.  Any player’s double rostering must be approved by the tournament director prior to the start of the tournament.  If a player is not approved, Legends reserves the rights to disqualify the player and/or nullify team results.

WEATHER

In the event of inclement weather or unplayable field conditions, Legends reserves the right to:

  • Reduce games to catch up with the schedule
  • Finish games before inclement weather arrives, or to preserve the fields
  • Reschedule games, if possible
  • Convert tournament to “Festival” format without playoffs or championships to provide most teams an opportunity to play as many games as possible

Every attempt will be made to update the changes and cancellations on the website.  However, the weather can change rapidly, and all teams should be prepared to play as soon as the weather clears, and fields are playable.  Should a tournament be on hold due to weather, the tournament organizer will send text messages/emails via the tourney machine app.  We HIGHLY recommend that all club directors, coaches and parents download this app on their phone so they can have the most up to date information.

If lightning is observed at any location:

  • play will be suspended immediately, and all teams must leave fields as quickly as possible. The safest location for people to relocate is in their cars.
  • Play will be allowed to resume 30 minutes after the last sight of lightning is observed. If a game is in progress:
    • If it is the second half of the game, the game will be considered final and the score at that point will be recorded
    • If it is the first half, when play resumes it will be the start of the second half
    • Every attempt will be made to begin subsequent games on time.

If the start of the second half of the suspended games delays the onset of the subsequent game the following actions may occur:

  • The game suspended will play one 20 minute running time second half
  • Subsequent games will begin immediately after proceeding games (teams will warm up on the sideline prior to the game)
  • Once games are back on schedule they will revert back to 21 minute halves

We will make every attempt to play event minute of every game but the safety of players and all tournament attendees comes first.

NO REFUNDS will be granted if these actions are necessary after the start of the tournament

Facility owners, not tournament organizers, have final say on whether the tournament will take place due to weather and field conditions

If the tournament is cancelled prior to the start of the event, a credit may be issued.  Final determination of refund amount will be on an event-by-event basis.  All events have fixed expenses related to field rental and facilities, set-up costs, insurance, personnel, and other matters regardless of cancelation due to weather.  Accordingly, no teams will receive full refunds of the registration fee if the tournament is canceled.

FREE AGENTS

Free Agents must register online for the event that they want to participate

PAYMENT
$25 placement fee due to Legends Lacrosse

How it Works
Once you have registered and paid your placement fee we will actively communicate with attending clubs/coaches to try and find a team that could use a Free Agent as a guest player.  We will do our best to place you on a team however, it is not guaranteed that you will be placed on a team

If you are picked up by a team…
Legends staff will connect you directly with the coach via email.  All Free Agents picked up by a team should expect to pay the teams per player fee (which varies from team to team.  This is something that will be discussed between players and coaches directly.)

If you are not picked up by a team…
The $25 placement fee will be refunded
